Growing up I spent time in many different sports and outdoors activities but never stuck at anything for more than a few years at any one time.

In 2002 I came along to a Proactive class at the excited suggestion of a friend. I was anxious at the thought of ‘having to fight’, but I thought that I would at least stick around long enough to learn how to keep myself safe and build a little confidence.

What I first thought Martial Arts was all about was very different to the real thing, and I’m grateful for my friends excitement that convinced me to try a class because nearly 20 years later he and I are both still training, now teaching our own students, and still on a lifelong journey of learning.

Meet Richard

"Get out there and be passionate about life!"

Richard has been involved in Martial Arts since the age of 5 and has been teaching Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Fitness classes at Proactive for the past 12 years.

During this time he has trained South Island, New Zealand and World Champions.

His own Kickboxing journey began in Australia, where he won an Australian Title and was ranked 4th in his weight class.

He has vast experience in multi-sports - having competed in some pretty amazing 1 - 3 day events, he has also competed in the National and World Mountain Bike racing scene.

Richard enjoys helping people achieve their goals and encouraging them to push past their limits.

YOU NEED TO THINK GREAT TO BE GREAT!

Meet Nigel

"

I started Zen Do Kai for the first time in 1986 for a short while but it wasn’t until 1988 that I really got into it, prior to that I had trained in some boxing and Judo as a child. I first started for the self-defence and fitness side of things but soon came to enjoy the environment, positive attitudes and challenges that went with the training.

Before I knew it I was training every day and progressing through the ranks. When I got to Shodan-Ho (Black Belt) in 1989, I opened my first club where I found I had a real interest in teaching. Through to this day my passion in Zen Do Kai has to be helping people to help themselves. I have found that through teaching students and watching them improve and grow, I myself have grown - either through their growth or the fact I have had to source more information to help them.

Meet Danni

“Showing up is the hardest part, now just be the best you that you can be today!”

Danni has been training since the age of 4 years old along side the rest of her family. Since then she has achieved 4 black belts including her Black shirt in Muay Thai kickboxing and now a 4th degree black belt in Zen Do kai.

Danni has been lucky enough to have followed her training over to Thailand where she trained at Tiger Muay Thai and has also stepped up into the ring twice. In 2019 she opened up Proactive Rolleston with her husband and they have thoroughly enjoyed helping all their students achieve their goals.

Outside of Martial arts Danni is a big animal lover working for the SPCA and having her own collection of horses, dogs and cats at home. In the middle of 2022 she also welcomed her beautiful daughter Nina to the world.

Danni has a passion for teaching children and helping people achieve their goals. She also enjoys doing mums and bubs sessions helping mums with their postnatal exercise journey.

Meet Jack

"I believe in practise, repetition and having something to strive towards"

Jack is very passionate about Kickboxing and has a big involvement as a coach in our Childrens / Teenage Kickboxing group class and also as a coach for the Teenage Fight Team.
